education

In many ways, education encompasses everything that CCB does, from Climate Affairs programs to workshops to educational publications. This cross-cutting theme can be examined by looking at the other sections of this website.

LearningHowever, there is another area of education that CCB has begun to develop: e-learning and wireless learning. A new development in CCB is called "Spare Time University," or STU, a notion to help in getting people involved in knowing about today's problems and proposed solutions in various aspects of life, especially those related to climate, water, and weather.

A lot of people are too busy or do not have the opportunity to take courses in school, whether it is at the high school or university level. CCB is developing ways to bring STU to those who want to participate. Radios, cellphones, and newspapers are media that can be used to get desired information to the people who work all day and want to use their spare time constructively.

Usable information is a top priority of a Spare Time University: new agricultural methods, new fishing techniques, different ways to till the soil, to terrace the hilly landscape, and methods used elsewhere to harvest water to dry areas, and so forth.

An article has been written by Michael Glantz about the idea of CCB and published in the World Meteorological Organization's Bulletin (April 2007, "How about a spare-time university?" Information about progress on the development of STU is available from CCB at the "Contact Us" button on the left-hand navigation bar.

And now ... for something completely different

Michael (Mickey) Glantz has been educating the public for many years now, first with a biweekly column in the local newspaper, the Daily Camera, and then moving to a "blog" that has been around for many years. Mickey frequently updates his "Fragilecologies" site as a public service to write articles for those who use the Internet in search of information on topics related to climate-society-environment interactions. This site is not affiliated with CCB or NCAR but is paid and maintained by Mickey himself.
